I will start by saying that at least some of the content in your Sewing Machine Manual is available online and often on YouTube. However, not all of it is there. Your manual is a priceless aid to your ability to sew with ease and far less headaches.

Your Sewing Machine Manual, Worth Way More Than the Paper it is Printed On

If You Don’t Have Your Manual

a sewing machine manual for the Bernina 530 and 550QE models. The off white cover features photos of both machines side by side. The image features sewing notions in the top right and bottom left hand corners inclcuding buttons, thread spools and a bobbin.

If you don’t have your manual, you can easily find a replacement with a quick Google search. Often, these online manuals are free or available for a few dollars, which is a small price to pay.

A quick search for the manual to my 1980’s Bernina 1120 brought up this free manual: https://www.manuals.ca/bernina/1120/manual

I already have this manual, but I very quickly and easily found an online version that was free to download.

Contents

The manual for your machine will not only cover the basics, but so much more like:

  • How to wind a bobbin
  • How to thread your machine
  • How to select options in the computer on your machine
  • How to select and sew specialty stitches
  • Troubleshooting when things go wrong
  • How to clean your machine

It will also contain everything you need to know about your particular machine. Does your machine require oil or not? No, not every sewing machine gets oiled, so please don’t assume yours does. Always refer to your manual first.

I have no idea what the aversion is about not looking in a sewing machine manual for basic information, but this seems to be the case. Rather than look in a manual we have on hand, we tend to head straight for the internet instead. Do not waste your time searching for something that is in the manual you already have.

I am trying to save you time and effort. Keep your manual nearby and refer to it before heading to the internet for the same information. Your sewing machine manual is worth way more than the paper it is printed on.
