Does this idea terrify you? Does it send you running in the opposite direction? Those are good things. Let me share how taking part in a quilt challenge will make you a better quilter.

Why You Should Take Part in a Quilt Challenge, Even if You’re a New Quilter

When I say a quilt challenge, I do not necessarily mean the type of challenge where you have to swap with another quilter or show off your block/quilt. However, doing both of those things will help your quilting.

When I say a quilt challenge, I mean a Quilt Along similar to the Back to Nature Quilt Along currently happening. Click here to join.

An image with the text Back to Nature QAL April 12-Jun 14. The image shows the nine blocks for the quilt along. Top left to bottom right are a snail with a colourful shell, a tree, a leaf, a blue owl with yellow foot, a mountain scene, a potted plant in a pink pot with two leaves and a stem, a frog, a red mushroom with a ladybug on the stem, a green parrot

While it is helpful if you post your blocks, there is nothing stopping you from taking part in a challenge and keeping your results to yourself. I mean, if you want to share, by all means, go ahead. However, if you are shy, you can keep your results to yourself.

These are my blocks so far.

The Reasons to Take Part

Taking part in a challenge will push your skills. The Back to Nature Quilt Along is pushing my personal disdain for Foundation Paper Piecing. However, I am pushing myself outside of my own quilting comfort zone this year by trying new techniques and getting back to some I’m not so fond of.

A Small Fee

Many challenges are free to take part in and you can’t go wrong with free. If there is a price, it is often small (less than $20).

What you Gain

Taking part in a quilt challenge can not only bring you new skills and/or confidence, but maybe even new friends that you met while taking part.

If you are a new quilter and this ideal totally terrifies you, it’s ok, but still try. Push past your fear and gain new skills by doing something that scares you.

A Freebie for You

Before I end for today, I also have a Free Guide that will help you as you get started quilting, and even if you have been quilting for a while.

Click here to grab The Top 5 Tools Every Beginner Quilter Needs. You don’t need a lot to get started quilting and you definitely don’t need a $2,000+ sewing machine. So grab your freebie and let’s get quilting.
