Taking Care of your Quilt: A Complete Guide

The Good News

The good news is, as long as you launder your quilt in cold water and tumble dry, your quilt will last for years to come. Wash with a mild detergent for best results.

I make a lot of baby quilts and have had more than one mom ask me “what happens when he/she throws up, poops or pees on it?” Simple, just throw it in the wash.

Hand Washing as an Alternative

If you are concerned, you could hand wash your quilt instead. Make sure that you do not wring the quilt to remove the water as this could weaken seams. It is better to put the wet quilt on a short spin cycle in your washer instead and then tumble dry or hang to dry.

Storing your Quilts

The best way to store your quilt is to use your quilt, either on a bed, the couch or beside your favourite chair.

However, if you need to store your quilt, gently fold it and store away from light. Light can damage the fabric if it is constantly shining on a quilt. If you need to store your quilt for extended periods of time, make sure you refold in a different direction every few months in order to keep deep creases from forming. Deep creases are very hard to remove.

Vintage Quilts

If you have a vintage quilt, washing and storing are more important. When washing a vintage quilt please hand wash and don’t wring out the water. Use a short spin cycle to get the water out. Air drying a vintage quilt is the best option in order to maintain the structural integrity of the quilt.

My Final Thoughts

Quilts are very durable and washing and drying them is perfectly fine. Hand wash if that makes you happier.
