Curved piecing can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Once you master a curved piecing technique, fear will be a thing of the past and you will be on the way to making amazing quilts.

Conquering Curved Piecing

Common curved piecing blocks include Orange Peel and Drunkard’s Path. They are great to look at, but tend to strike fear in the hearts of quilters. Don’t worry, I’ve got you. In this article I’m going to share some easy curved piecing techniques you can use to make fear a thing of the past.

Piecing with Pins

Curved piecing with pins is where many quilters get started with curved piecing. Simply fold both your convex and concave pieces in half and mark the center with a pencil or finger press. Next, fold both ends toward the center and mark.

Now, take your pins and pin on those marks inward towards the block. If you need the block to be firmer as you sew the curves, you can pin between these 3 pins.

Please note, sewing curves is fiddly and they try to find a way to mess you up. Patience is key when sewing curved blocks.

Piecing with Glue

Grab a normal glue stick and meet another way to piece curved blocks. Simply place glue within the quarter inch seam allowance, pat down and sew the seam. Gluing the pieces is a lot faster and less troublesome than pinning. You just need to pay attention to where you are placing the glue.

The key to curved piecing is pressing your fabric in advance so that it is as flat as possible.
