Unless you plan to wing your quilting, you will probably have to mark the top in some manner. This way you have physical marks to follow. We’re looking at marking your quilts for quilting in this article.

What is Marking?
Marking is placing physical marks on your quilt top which can be followed to quilt your quilt. These marks can be vague marks placed as a suggestion or marks created from a stencil. Let’s look at different types of marking utensils.
Marking Methods
Pens
The best pens to use for marking are air erasable pens. However, you need to work quickly or the marks will disappear on you. However, I just found these Clover Air Erasable Markers that disappear in 2-7 days.
There are also water erasable markers on the market, however I caution using them if you have not prewashed your fabric in advance.
Chalk
Chalk for marking is available in a couple of options. Chalk markers like the Clover Chaco Liner or chalk pads like the Ultimate Pounce Pad.
The Chaco Liner is rolled over the area you wish to mark. The Pounce Pad is used with stencils to create a design to quilt over. Please be cautious with the blue chalk for the Pounce Pad. I have heard of some quilters having difficulty removing the blue chalk from their quilt tops. Stick to the white or yellow chalks instead.
Frixion Pens
Frixion pens are marketed to the quilting market, despite a little known fact. Frixion pens were not made to work on fabric. They are meant for paper, however, somehow they have ended up in the quilting market. The unfortunate thing about Frixion pens is your marking lines can reappear if the quilt gets cold. So if you live in a place where you experience winter for example, do not use Frixion pens for your marking.
My Final Thoughts
I hope you found value in Quilt Marking Tools. As you can see there are a few different options to choose from depending on what you are marking. It is always best to test on a scrap before assuming you will be able to remove the markings.
