Labelling your quilts is an important step that many forget or don’t bother with. Taking the time to label your quilt ensures your work is remembered.
Don’t Skip the Quilt Label
What is a Quilt Label
A quilt label is a small piece of fabric included on the back of a quilt that includes information such as who made the quilt and when.
Labelling your quilts ensures your work is documented. It also makes a wonderful addition to a quilt that is gifted for a special occasion or even just because.
How to Create a Quilt Label
You can create a quilt label in a number of ways but the most common ways are:
- use a sharpie or other permanent marker and write on a piece of fabric,
- create a file on a computer and print it on a piece of printable fabric, and
- create an embroidery file on a sewing machine and stitch it out
What Information to Include on a Quilt Label
If you plan to include a label on your quilts, the information you include may vary. However, these are the most common fields you may want to include:
- Your name
- Year completed
- Quilt name (if you name your quilts)
- Quilt pattern (the quilt was based on)
For wedding gifts, you may want to include the names of the bride and groom and date of the wedding too.
How much information you include on your label is totally up to you.
How to Attach your Label
Fold under the edges of the label and use a simple whip stitch to attach your label to the back of the quilt.
A Different Kind of Quilt Label
You can also stitch out your name, year completed and any other information in your binding strip. I did this many years ago, but sadly don’t have a photo to share.
My Final Thoughts
I hope you found value in Don’t Skip the Quilt Label. We should all be labelling our quilts, but many do not. I have heard many stories of quilts found in the wild that were returned to family members because the quilter took the time to label the quilt.
