Let me start by saying, I have not explored every possible store you can purchase quilting fabric from in Canada. I will be sharing the stores I have personally shopped with. Being based near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has not stopped me from purchasing from shops in other provinces. Let’s get started.
The Best Places to Buy Quilt Fabric in Canada
Quilt Stores
Quilt stores will always be your best bet. While I understand that purchasing fabric from quilt stores comes at a higher cost, that is because the fabric is higher quality. It has a higher thread count (think bed sheets), than quilt fabric sold at Fabricland or other generic fabric stores. While the fabric may come at a higher price, it is better fabric, period.
Since I live in Ontario, I am going to start with Ontario quilt shops.
GTA (Greater Toronto Area)
Let me share some of my favourite stores local to me.
Fabric Spark
Darryl at Fabric Spark runs a wonderful shop full of everything you need to quilt, make garments, bags and more. Fabric Spark is located on the Danforth in Toronto at 1992 Danforth Avenue. Make sure you get on her email list because she offers weekly specials and more.
The Workroom
Karyn at The Workroom has an outstanding shop. She recently relocated her shop to Sprucedale, Ontario, but ships quickly. While I miss The Workroom in Toronto, I continue to support Karyn. The Workroom is located at 2501 ON 518 West, Sprucedale.
Like Fabric Spark, you can find everything you need for quilting, garment making and more.
European Textiles
European Textiles is a fabulous fabric shop on Ottawa Street in Hamilton. While not a quilt store per se, they do carry a lot of quilt fabrics and so much more. European Textiles is located at 277 Ottawa Street North, Hamilton.
Ontario
Hyggeligt Fabrics
A wonderful shop in St. Mary’s Ontario. They specialize in Kaffe Fassett, Tula Pink and other designers. They also offer QuiltWorx Retreats. Hyggeligt Fabrics is located at 144 Queen Street East, St. Mary’s.
Mad About Patchwork
Mad About Patchwork is my favourite shop that I have never visited because, unfortunately, she is 390 km away. However, she has amazing modern fabrics and wonderful workshops. Mad About Patchwork is located at 2477 Huntley Road, Stittsville, ON.
Now we’re going to look at the rest of our beautiful country, moving East to West.
Newfoundland
East Coast Quilt Co.
A lovely shop in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I have ordered from her a few times and received my orders quickly. East Coast Quilt Co. is located at 343 Water St., St. John’s, NF.
New Brunswick
The Quilting Shed
My friend, Andrea runs The Quilting Shed in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Despite losing almost all of her stock in a fire in an adjacent unit to hers in the Spring, she now has an amazing new store located at 50 Hedley St, Suite 4. She has everything you need for quilting, bag making and more. Go check her out and tell here Lynda sent you.
Manitoba
Keystone Modern Creative
This is a wonderful online modern quilting shop located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Alberta
Adventures in Fabric
I recently discovered this shop located in Calgary, Alberta. They are a shop that not only sells quilting supplies, but also garment making supplies. Adventures in Fabric is an online shop.
Along Came Quilting
I have been buying from Along Came Quilting for years. They are a quilting shop that also specializes in bag making supplies. Along Came Quilting is located at 6432-1A Street SW in Calgary.
Birdie and Dot Fabrics
I have been purchasing from Birdie and Dot Fabrics for about 5 years. I found my way there because she sells a lot of Tula Pink fabrics. I recently purchased my Oliso M3 Pro Project Iron here because it was out of stock in Ontario. This wonderful store with outstanding customer service is an online business.
Purple Katz Quilting
Another of the online shops, Purple Katz Quilting is a fantastic shop. I also stumbled on them because they carry many of the modern fabrics I like e.g. Giucy Giuce, Tula Pink etc. This is a great shop.
British Columbia
Troll Brothers Quilt Designs
I discovered this fantastic shop many years ago. She carries modern fabrics and bag making supplies. Troll Brothers Quilt Designs is located at 2744 E Shawnigan Lake Road in Shawnigan Lake.
As I said from the start, these are shops that I have personally shopped with and can recommend. I know there are a lot more quilt stores in Canada, and I hope to shop from them in the future.
My Final Thoughts
I hope you found this helpful. These are all great shops. Remember, quilting fabric is worth the extra dollars due to the higher thread count in the fabrics. If you are making bed quilts, you should be using quilt store fabrics. This way, they are less likely to break down or fall apart with continual use.
